After a fight with her friend Abdullah, a neighborhood boy she shouldn’t be playing with, Wadjda sees a beautiful green bicycle for sale. She wants the bicycle desperately so that she can beat Abdullah in a race. But Wadjda’s mother won’t allow it, fearing repercussions from a society that sees bicycles as dangerous to a girl’s virtue. ———————–
This workshop presents a sacred moment for you to connect with your body and to Coatlicue (our mother earth). The earth gives us life, in the air we breathe, the food we eat, the water we drink, and the medicine we take. It is essential when taking from the earth we do it only with respect and always give something back. That could be in the seeds we plant or the water we give to nourish the earth, also creating a relationship with the plants they will soon enough begin to communicate what they need. We come from the earth and keeping a connection is essential in creating a healthy way of living, physically and spiritually.
I will inform you on 3 herbs that can nourish your body. My intention is to inspire the idea of bringing herbs back into our daily routine while taking a moment to connect with our bodies using herbal medicine as our ancestors did. These 3 herbs focus on our center energy as womyn and we will take this moment to share our stories in a safe & sacred space. We will discuss any concerns or ask any questions we might have regarding our wombs along with other healing exercises. I hope with sharing my knowledge you will then feel empowered and create a better relationship with yourself and the earth.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS RIDE IS FOR WOMYN, WOMYN IDENTIFIED, QUEER, TWO-SPIRITED, TRANS, GENDER NON CONFORMING INDIVIDUALS!!!!!

Ovarian Psycos Present: The Tender Gender Bender Ride! This Sunday, November 24th!

Untitled

Is gender just a matter of being male and female? Is gender only about the way you look or dress? Is it about how you see yourself and how it affects you? Is it socially constructed by the capitalist system to create a gender hierarchy?

Join Las Ovarios del Barrio this month as we explore these questions and more!!!

During this months all gender ride the Ovarian Psycos invite you to come and explore the spectrum of gender. We will touch on the basics of:

*gender identity
* gender as a social construction
*patriarchy & colonialism as they relate to gender politics
*how to be an ally to folx with who’s identity lies outside the gender binary (societies definitions of masculine & feminine)

This workshop will be mostly activity and discussion based. We want to create a safe space for folx to share and learn. Therefore, we encourage everyone to come with an open heart and open mind. Bigotry and oppression will not be tolerated.

“Ovarian Psyco Cycles’ Bike Brigade Is the Best Thing Ever” – according to JEZEBEL!

Whoa whoa! Thank you everyone for all the support thus far! We’re just a small collective of only 8 now attempting to create a world where “womyn of color are change agents who maintain and create holistic health within themselves and their respective communities for present and future generations”

Here’s a post that JEZEBEL put on their website earlier today!

Image

The all-woman, mostly Latina Ovarian Psyco Cycles Brigade is “both an answer and a challenge to the aggressive male biking culture” in Los Angeles. Fuck yes.

Evelyn Martinez grew up with a mother who told her it wasn’t safe for women to ride bikes. Now, she leads the Ovarian Psyco Cycles Brigade, which defies both car culture AND macho bike culture. The nine main members are mostly 20 something Latina nonprofit workers who organize a monthly women’s “Luna Ride” during the full moon. Is this a dream?

Ovarian Psycos in the LA TIMES!

Image

Growing up, Evelyn Martinez’s mother didn’t want her to ride a bike.

“She thinks it’s not safe for women to be riding late at night, and cars are dangerous too,” Martinez said.

Moreover, her mother told her: “Bicycles are for men.”

But after a chance meeting last year, Martinez joined an all-female, predominantly Latino cycling group that is both an answer and a challenge to the aggressive male biking culture. Like men’s bike crews, it defies L.A.’s monolithic car culture with an in-your-face ethic, reflected in its name: the Ovarian Psyco Cycles Brigade.

The group says the name “is a play on words intended to be playful and simultaneously create some sort of acknowledgment/acceptance/pride in one’s historically oppressed body.”
